Icelandic Sustainable Fisheries and Environmental Certifications

The purpose of ISF is to obtain certifications of fishing gear and fish stocks exploited around Iceland. ISF seeks fisheries certifications towards the Marine Stewardship Council Standards (MSC), audited and assessed by certified and independent certification bodies according to the requirements laid down in the MSC standards.

The objective is to show buyers and consumers that all fisheries around Iceland is sustainable, that a lot of effort is made to conserve and maintain fish stocks and marine environment so that they may continue to be the primary source of prosperity in the country, attainable through the knowledge and respect for the marine environment.

ISF was founded in 2012 by companies engaged in fishing, production and sales of Icelandic fish products. Only the company‘s shareholders have the right to sell their products as MSC certified. The certification opens up markets, specifically requiring an MSC certification, where consumers are more reluctant to buy products without environmental certifications such as MSC.
